Completed during my residency with Drifter Galleries in July 2023.
This painting is inspired by my journey from East London, where I am bases, to the gallery residency space in West London. Like water mixed with oil, side by side but never fully joining, these two sides of London feel very different. As I began the piece I reflected on the deep connections to place and the things that ties us together. Completely connected to the landscape, my mothers grandparents were farmers from the West of Ireland and my Fathers were farmers from the Middle East, Lebanon. Sharing some similarities, but many cultural differences, I wanted to convey the meeting in the middle, converging, two sides coming together for a time before dispersing. But forever leaving behind the little traces of the interactions. Memories of relationships and stories told, forged in the mind forever.
As wells drawing on heritage & identity, I was also inspired by the idea of fragmented memories; echoes of the past; plastered wall; terazzo tiles I saw that morning that reminded me of warmer landscapes; symbols of sand timers; umbrellas; Catholicism; nature- birds, mountains; Arabic language & expressions of love through text.
