‘I love the playfulness and unpredictability of painting, witnessing what emerges on the canvas, sometimes suggestions of people, & places, occasionally more vivid representations, changing with the light and layers of paint over time, as I try to capture the feeling in my head’

About

Shereen Tabet (b.1985)

Scottish Lebanese Abstract Expressionist Artist, born and previously based in Glasgow, now living and working in Hackney, East London.

Shereen’s practice explores an obsession with colour, light, texture and layering, through mixed media painting and clay. Her abstract work, partly inspired by photographs taken on her travels, incorporates textured gestural brush strokes and subtle suggestions of shape, juxtaposed with fragments of bold mark making and sometimes inclusion of ‘hidden’ figures, inviting the viewer to look closer. With recurring themes of connection to place, relationships, heritage and identity, Shereen has an interest in how our memory interprets past experiences, people and places, often including locations and landscapes that she feels deeply connected to through family ties and love, including Scotland, Lebanon, Ireland and Australia. Her paintings reflect the nature of our memories: vague, fleeting, at times interspersed with moments of clarity and lucidity, displaying sometimes joyful recollections, other times evoking a sense of nostalgia and melancholy.

Art Education

NQ 3D Design Portfolio Preparation Course, Glasgow Clyde College, Glasgow (September 2008- 2009).

~In 2009, following her first degree (BSc Geography from The University of Glasgow ) and on completion of the 3D Design portfolio & interview, Shereen received an unconditional offer to study Sculpture and Environmental Art at the Glasgow School of Art, Scotland. Shereen was unable to accept the offer at that time and, after deferring her place for a year, moved to London where she began creating, writing music and playing with various bands, including Ghost Airplane. Shereen went on to complete an MSc in Speech and Language Therapy at The University of Essex in 2013, becoming a Specialist Speech and Language Therapist whilst also continuing to develop her artwork independently and through additional courses. Shereen’s knowledge and experience of supporting others to communicate in adaptive, creative and motivating ways, has been invaluable in her own creative journey, learning to express her ideas authentically through her art. In recent years, Shereen’s obsession with creating and expressing through paint, concrete, clay and photography has intensified and she continues to develop her mostly self taught practice daily in her studio at New River Studios, Manor House.
